Connect vs Control
As a person who seeks to influence and impact youth, I’ve had to adjust strategies over the years. It may be adjusting expectations, or understanding what actually works. The reality is, nothing “works,” because youth aren’t things to be fixed or maintained. Youth today face uncertainties and unknowns that never existed in previous generations. So from time to time in these posts, I will share suggestions and strategies, but no guarantees.
First, is the ned to see ourselves as guides and coaches, not God! Only God knows outcomes, but we can be significant influencers if we seek to connect, rather than control them, as they go through their teen years. They will change their minds often, dress differently, like different things, often in the space of a year. But it is here that we get to help them find independence, empathy, grace, and stability, all leading to influence when it’s needed most.
