This year was very special in so many ways; especially since all 18 of our high school graduates started at Rise Up while in kindergarten or first grade. Sadly, one Rise Up student was missing at our graduation celebration. Edward Buckman, who would have been a graduating senior this year, unexpectedly passed away on August 16, 2015. He was admitted to the hospital on a Friday for heart pain. Forty-eight hours later, Edward passed.
Edward was well loved and liked by everyone who knew him. In all his time at Rise Up, not once was he involved in conflict. He loved the game of basketball and had a bright future with his athleticism. His passing was hard on this group of graduates, and for many this was their first exposure to the death of a friend.
At the time of Edward’s passing, we committed to refurbishing and rededicating the Rise Up basketball court in his honor. And, we did. We added bleachers, resurfaced the court, and Leah Turley painted a mural that is reflective of Edward’s growth. It was a privilege to have his family present at the dedication and for the seniors to experience closure and next steps.
Many thanks to World Concrete for the donation of the pad, to Leah Turley for her artistic expression, and to Michael Turley and Seth Morefield for their hard work to make Edward’s Court a reality.
